A info icon with a tooltip, showing the fields affected by the text search would be a nice addition to the search field.

Sometimes, the user does not know what fields are affected by the search field. If this hint will be given to him, he will better understand about the search capabilities.

BTW, is the parameter "searchable" retrievable in a template? This info could be used in template to create the help bubble or a placeholder text in the search input field.

"Searchable" is a field parameter.

I believe it will require 1 additional query to get all fields of a particular section with the parameter. Since the number of sections and fields are normally quite small compared to the number of articles, the query time will be fast.

Mentioned it in another topic comment, but can´t find it right now.

What about using HTML5 PLACEHOLDER attribute ? Sergey had a complaint because of browser support, but that can also be accomplished by using a script as a helper. There are scripts on jQuery or MooTools basis. ;-)
