The child field list template overrides (Show children) will always show the title (even an empty one), even if the template setting "Show title" = NO and the article title setting is "No title".

Not true for me. If i set no title then there is no title. At least for simple template I am testing with. May be you have custom template? Or perhaps you have applied template parameters but forget to save field parameters?
