Is it possible to get the records module in Cobalt to display records with a create date newer than a certain date - like 6 months or something?

You mean future articles?

Right now I have a module that displays articles randomly. What I would like to do is display a random article that has been created some time during the last 6 months. I don't want to display random articles older than 6 months.

Good point and idea! I remember I have created a "time frame/period" parameter in the older MightyResources records module. I just needed it for future events... and used the "pre-defined" time intervals like day, week, month, quarter, year. An additional unit parameter set the amount.

Would be nice to have a similar option in Cobalt Records module.

Something like that would be fine. I just want to prevent some of the really old stuff from coming up so the exact time period is not that important in this case. If you wanted to get fancy though, you could combine the ability to use a field value AND a time period for create date or last modified date for ultimate flexibility :)
