Can the field object of Parent and child have a property for the number of related child and parent records?

There is "Limit multiple parent" and "Limit children per one parent" parameters. Is this what you need?

no. In a list template i wanted to know how many parent or child records exist.

A list template shows only a defined number of children (based on field parameter), but there might be much more. To indicate how many are there, the real number might be helpful.

how many related records to list, probably template parameter. Select query takes that as parameter for page navigation.
